Nail fungus is a common problem across the globe. Technically referred to as Onychomycosis, this condition is brought about by tiny organisms that affect the areas right beneath the toenails. These organisms are attracted to and will successfully invade warm, dark and moist places.

The most common signs of nail fungus include flaky, brittle, chipped and abnormally colored nails. Because of the infection, it is possible for the feet to start smelling bad and for one to actually experience pain when walking.

To eliminate the problem without too much cost, here are some toenail fungus home remedies to choose from.

1. Vinegar – Soak the toenails for 20 minutes in a solution made up of equal amounts of warm water and vinegar. For a more effective solution, one can use apple cider. When the time is up, the toes and toenails should be thoroughly dried with a dry and clean towel. If possible, one can continue drying with the use of a highly absorbent paper. For best results, this should be done two times everyday.

2. Rubbing Alcohol – An alternative to vinegar is rubbing alcohol, which can be bought at any drugstores in town. One can soak the toes affected with toenail fungus in alcohol for about 20 minutes and dried after with super absorbent paper. It is recommended that this be done twice a day.

3. Listerine – Another way to deal with toenail fungus is with the help of Listerine mouthwash. Almost, if not, all households today have this solution in their bathrooms. Listerine contains antiseptic, which is effective in eradicating the fungus. All it takes is to soak the toenails in the solution for 20 minutes twice everyday.

4. Tea Tree Oil – This popular oil is actually an effective and even considered to be quite powerful antiseptic and fungicide. With the help of a cotton ball, one can rub tea tree oil on the affected toenails in the morning and at night before sleeping.

5. Hydrogen Peroxide – A highly effective toenail fungus treatment solution is made up of water and hydrogen peroxide (3%). One can soak the toenails in this for at least 20 minutes in the morning and at night. If possible, one can use pure hydrogen peroxide without any water, but this is considered too harsh for some people, so it is usually mixed with water.

These toenail fungus home remedies have been tested to really work on eliminating nail fungus. However, prevention always outweighs the cure. Hence, it is best to avoid the possibilities of acquiring this problem. One should steer free from public shower areas and never use other people’s clippers and similar personal stuff to avoid getting infected with the fungus.
